We know how exciting it is to get your Oklahoma drivers license – but we also know how overwhelming it may get. It can be confusing to know what you have to do and when. That’s why we put together this step-by-step guide. From signing up for drivers ed to finally getting that license, this is all the information you’ll need to get where you’re going.

Before getting started, submit your Parent Taught Drivers Ed affidavit to Service Oklahoma.

  • Your parents will need to complete and submit an affidavit to Service Oklahoma in order to get you started. That form can be found here, along with more information about the course.
  • Please review the affidavit for parent instructor eligibility requirements.

Step 1: Pass the first 5 units of our Parent Taught Drivers Ed course

  • The Oklahoma parent-taught drivers education course is an alternative to conventional driver education, and is recognized by the Department of Public Safety. It is offered as correspondence study through approved parent-taught drivers education providers.
  • You must be at least 15 years old to begin the written coursework. An instruction permit must be issued before starting behind-the-wheel lessons, and it must be on hand whenever you’re driving.

Step 2: Get  your Oklahoma Learner’s Permit

  • To begin your behind the wheel training, you’ll need to have an Oklahoma learner’s permit. To apply for your permit, simply visit the Licensing Office location nearest to you!
  • There are several things you’re required to bring with you to the Licensing Office. Check out this section of our help center for more information!
  • You will need to enter your permit number in your profile in order to take your final exam. You may do so by logging into your account here

Step 3: Graduating our Oklahoma Parent Taught Drivers Ed course

It’s about the journey, not the destination - but here we are at the end of your I Drive Safely course! Once you successfully complete your course, we will send you a certificate of completion. You’ll need to take this with you to the Licensing Office when you apply for your driver license.

Step 4: Getting your Oklahoma Intermediate License

  • After you’ve held your permit for at least 6 months with no traffic convictions, you are eligible to get your Oklahoma drivers license.
  • You must take and pass your road skills test at the Licensing Office to get your license. Please note that this test is by appointment only.
  • This license has several restrictions:
    • You must be accompanied by a driver who is 21 or older if you are driving between 11PM and 5AM
    • You may only drive one passenger, anyone from your  family, or any person over the age of 21

Step 5: Getting your Unrestricted Oklahoma Drivers License

  • Once you’ve held your intermediate drivers license for at least 6 months without being found guilty of any traffic violations, you’re eligible to get your unrestricted Oklahoma drivers license!
  • There are several things you’re required to bring with you to the Licensing Office. Check out this section of our help center for more information!
