How do our courses work?
1. Check your eligibility
We have all of the eligibility requirements and steps to take for the Florida Traffic School Courses listed on our How It Works page. Generally, you are eligible in the state of Florida if you:
- ● Hold a valid non-commercial drivers license
- ● Have been cited for a minor moving violation
- ● Have NOT completed traffic school in the last 12 months
- ● Have contacted your court within 30 days of your citation
If you still are unclear as to whether you qualify for traffic school, contact your court and request more information concerning your particular circumstance.
2. Take the course!
If you don’t get a passing score of 80% or higher on your first try, you are able to retake your quizzes and final exam as many times as you need to to pass!
3. Receive your certificate in the mail
We process your information as soon as the course is complete so you can get your certificate quickly.
4. Submit your certificate to your insurance company or where specified by your court
Each court is a little different. This means you’ll be given a time frame and directions on how your specific court wants you to submit your certificate (fax, mail, in person, etc.).
If you are taking this course for an insurance discount or point reduction, make sure you’ve notified your insurance company or make sure your check with the DHSMV to ensure the points have been removed from your record.
If you are taking our 12- hour course, your certificate will automatically be reported to the state of Florida.

1. Call your insurance provider.
They will provide you with the eligibility requirements for reducing your insurance rates as well as the cost of the discount.
2. Enroll in and complete your 4-hour Traffic School course.
You only need to take the 4-hour course for an insurance reduction.
3. Send your certificate of completion to your insurance company.
Your insurance company will let you know how to get the certificate to them (via mail or electronic delivery.)
4. Enjoy your reduced insurance rate!
How do I remove points from my driving record?
1. Contact your court and request permission to take traffic school.
Unless your court has ordered you to attend a driver improvement course, you will need to inform them of your wishes to take traffic school in lieu of license points. To submit your request to the court you may either appear in person by the date indicated, or submit a request by mail.
To request traffic school by mail:
- ● Indicate on your citation your intention to attend a traffic school course
- ● Complete the affidavit given with your citation envelope
- ● Have your signature on the affidavit notarized
- ● Mail in your citation and affidavit within 30 days to the county clerk’s office where you received the citation
You will be eligible and should be granted permission providing that:
- ● You have not taken traffic school within the past 12 months
- ● You do not hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL)
- ●You have contacted the court within 30 days of receiving your traffic ticket
You must still pay your ticket fine, which is typically done at the time you request traffic school. You must also pay a court election fee, which varies by county.
2. Enroll in and complete your I Drive Safely Florida 4-hour Traffic School course.
3. Submit your completion certificate to the court within the deadline specified.
Each court will give directions on how they wish your certificate to be submitted (fax, mail, in person, etc.), and each will give you a time frame after you’ve finished your course within which to submit your certificate.
4. Check your driving record to verify your point reduction.
Make sure the DHSMV has received your completion certificate and has given you credit for your traffic school course. Though the violation will remain on your record, the points associated with it should be removed.
How do I fulfill a court-mandated traffic school requirement?
1. Receive a notification from the court of your traffic school requirement.
Habitual traffic offenders will be notified that they must attend an advanced driver improvement course, above the 4-hour BDI course. You may be required to appear in court by the date on your citation, or you may receive instructions by mail.
2. Enroll in and complete your I Drive Safely Florida 8-hour traffic school course.
3. Submit your completion certificate to the court within the deadline specified.
Each court will give directions on how they would like your certificate to be submitted (fax, mail, in person, etc.), and each will give you a time frame after you’ve finished your course to submit your certificate.
4. Check your driving record to verify your point reduction.
Make sure the DHSMV has received your completion certificate and has given you credit for your traffic school course. Though the violation will remain on your record, the points associated with it should be removed.
My license is suspended/revoked. How do I fulfill my court mandated 12-hour traffic school requirement?
1. Receive a court order to attend an Advanced Driver Improvement Course.
You will likely need to appear before a judge due to your license suspension or revocation, at which time you will be notified of your required attendance at an ADI course.
2. Enroll in the Florida 12-Hour ADI Course. Apply for a Florida hardship license.
A hardship license will allow you to drive to and from your place of employment so that you aren’t in jeopardy of losing your income. To apply for your hardship license:
- ● Schedule an appointment at the DHSMV for license reinstatement.
- ● Print out your enrollment certificate upon registering for the course.
- ● Order a copy of your Florida 30-day driving record.
-
● Take both the enrollment certificate and your driving record to the DHSMV at your scheduled appointment.
3. Complete the 12-Hour ADI Course.
4. Receive your completion certificate, along with confirmation of your course completion being reported to the Florida DHSMV.
You won’t need to send in your certificate, as your completion will be automatically reported. You will then receive notice from the court regarding the next steps to license reinstatement. This may or may not involve a court appearance or application for reinstatement at the DHSMV.
At that time, you will need to provide:
- ● Proof of registration
- ● Proof of insurance
- ● A license reinstatement fee (which varies by court)
You will also need to retake your drivers license exam and vision test. After you have completed all requirements, you will be re-issued your Florida drivers license.
Do I have to report my certificate of completion to the state of Florida for the 12-hour course?
Nope, we’ve got you covered! If you’re completing the course as directed by the DHSMV, reporting will happen automatically to the state of Florida via electronic delivery.
If you’ve been ordered to complete the course by a Florida court, your completion certificate will be processed as soon as possible for delivery to your home address. You are free to do what you’d like with your certificate at that point!
